From feeling stuck To having a mentor…
Ask for a mentor when you are ready to journey to the next level in your life, whether a professional mentor or a spiritual mentor.
A great way to invest in yourself this year is asking for someone to mentor you. Think about ALL of the reasons that you believe you need a mentor. Are you just looking for someone to give you all of the answers? Are you looking to dive into a new field and need to be shown the ropes? Do you feel that you are at a spiritual plateau and are looking for guidance and encouragement?
Who to look for:
- An expert in the field/topic
- Someone who is living out the life style you desire
- Someone who has been honest about their own journey
Once you seek out who it is, prepare yourself to ask them. Be honest in what you are looking forward to in this new mentorship/relationship. Share with them what you plan to bring to the table and be prepared to answer questions that they may ask. When asking, be straight forward. These individuals are probably busy and will appreciate that you were prepared, knew what you were looking for and that you respected their time.
Things to remember:
- Having a mentor is still a partnership
- Make sure this person is a good fit for you
- Have a plan in place (time frame/ goals/ expectations)
My story:
2016 was a pretty rough year for me and I was spiritually drained. I needed encouragement and for someone to pour into me by spending one- on-one time with me. I was looking for a woman who was living out the Christian walk that I desired to walk.
There is an older woman at church who is in love with the Lord, married and her children adore her (Psamls 31 woman). I walked up to her after church on the First Sunday of 2017 and asked her to be my mentor. We set a date to talk and see what we were looking for in this mentorship. I have been blessed throughout 2017! We talk regularly. We have Bible studies and we she knows where I’m weak and encourages me and challenges me with God’s word (exactly what I needed). She is actually now one of my closest friends and biggest cheer leaders. I love what our relationship has grown into. She has mentioned to me that she has been blessed by our relationship as well.
This year, I want to encourage you to invest in yourself by reaching out and asking for a mentor!
From me,
Chrissy
